Homeschooling Handwriting

  1. Pay attention to posture!  The wrist needs to be straight and “hovering” when the kid is writing, but should not rest on the table.  Also don’t let kids lean down too much.  The arm should bend at a 90 degree angle.
  2. Let kids practice with both pen and pencil.  They have to gain control over all possible tools.  You never know in the future which approach will be required.
  3. It is important to practice size and slant.  Find a writing style that feels comfortable and looks good. Use handwriting software to make worsheets tailored to your kid/s needs.
  4. Don’t grab the pen or pencil too hard.  The kid may internalize this causing negative incidents in tests.  As well as discomfort in arms and body.
  5. Experiment with different types of pencils and pens.  See which grip is better for your kid/s.
